Jeff Booth – President & CEO; Co-founder
Jeff Booth is President & CEO at BuildDirect who applies his curiosity and deep knowledge of both technology and trends to how people can browse, sample and purchase home improvement products.
Drawing from his experience as a builder, Jeff co-founded BuildDirect in 1999 from his first-hand experience with inefficiencies and high costs inherent with the home improvement products industry. Jeff created an entirely new online channel resulting in an effective and unbeatable distribution method for manufacturers and a simple and hassle-free one for the customer with high quality products at the best possible price.
Through the creation and use of custom analytics, Jeff and his team uses technology to understand the customer’s buying process, anticipates their purchase journey, and identifies both trends and growth opportunities in the industry.
Jeff is passionate about learning and is an active speaker sharing his experience as an entrepreneur and thought leader on the future of e-commerce and how digital media is changing the world. He is also a member of the Young Presidents Organization and sits on the boards for both Spud.ca and Costal Contacts.
Robert Banks - Executive Officer; Co-Founder
Rob utilized his 11 years of experience in senior management and his passion for finance and business development to successfully co-found BuildDirect.
From 1989 to 1996, he was a financial consultant and co-managed a multi-million dollar investment portfolio within a major Canadian financial institution. During 1997 and 1998, he co-founded and was Vice President Responsible for Strategic Planning and Marketing of an American environmental product company.
He also has experience on a not-for-profit board of directors. Rob has solidified BuildDirect’s relationships with suppliers in multiple product lines, negotiating pricing, quality, and sales agreements on products now dominant in their market segments.

Jim Hourigan – Chief Operating Officer
Jim joined BuildDirect in May 2009 moving from Atlanta GA, bringing to the company significant international experience as a senior operations executive in the consumer and medical products industries. Jim is responsible for developing and optimizing the operational processes for BuildDirect’s global supply chain and customer services.
Jim graduated from the State University of New York, and also earned his MBA from the University of Dallas. Jim has continued to invest in education and is certified as CIRM by APICS and a Black Belt in Six Sigma. His career has spanned organizations from start ups through to multinational organizations throughout his career including London International, Eastman Kodak, A.H. Robins and A. C. Nielsen.
Jim has extensive overseas experience having lived in the UK for over 2 years and working in China and Southeast Asia over the past 15 years.
John Sotham – Vice President, Finance
John joined us at BuildDirect after four years of public accounting experience with KPMG as Senior Accountant in Assurance services. He brings an extensive background in audit, taxation, and business advisory services.
Prior to joining KPMG, and earning his C.A. designation and Diploma of Technology in Operations Management., John worked in the environmental technology industry with Microsep International, a subsidiary of Atkinson Construction, a high-tech, manufacturing, and resource-based organization.
During his four year tenure with Microsep, John advanced to the role of US Sales Manager where he was responsible for developing Microsep’s US sales infrastructure, and assessing joint venture operations with key business partners.
John’s extensive background and dedication is an asset to the creation BuildDirect’s long-term strategy for success.
Dan Brodie – Vice President, Information Technology
Dan Brodie is VP Technology at BuildDirect whose focus is to align technology and corporate strategy to advance the organization’s growth and expansion.
Dan directs technology innovation across BuildDirect such as building and enhancing its custom e-commerce platform; research, development and application of proprietary, predictive analytics and reporting; creation and incubation of new technologies; and, cultivation of the company’s tech talent.
As one of the earliest leaders at BuildDirect joining the company in 2000, Dan has held leadership roles in both finance and operations before moving into technology in 2006. Key accomplishments include building out the company’s first financial model to dynamically show financial projections; creating the company’s e-commerce platform still used today; developing automated complex logistics algorithms to optimize shipping costs and shipment routing for customers; establishing and launching paid marketing and search engine optimization initiatives; and, creating and leading the development and integration of cutting-edge dynamic analytical systems and tools into the BuildDirect platform.
Prior to joining BuildDirect, Dan was at Canada Trust (now TD Canada Trust), where he led the application and development of technology solutions to automate compliance, taxation and risk management systems and reports that reduced deadlines and workload by over 80% and significantly improved overall reporting accuracy.
As a leader in his field, Dan was a key player in developing the Business Analytics program for one of Canada’s leading technical schools – British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and currently sits on two of the institution’s program advisory committees: Business Information Technology Management and Business Analytics. Dan is a regular speaker for the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business MBA programs as well as BCIT and industry conference panels.
Dan is skilled in Lean Management, trained through the Lean Enterprise Institute, and applies lean thinking at BuildDirect resulting in savings between $250K and $500K year-over-year. He is a graduate of both BCIT and the Canadian Securities Institute.
Gail Galea – Chief Merchandising Officer
Gail joined BuildDirect in 2012, bringing with her a wealth of experience in global sourcing, multi-category product development and market positioning gained from working with the world’s largest retailer.
Formerly Walmart Canada’s senior vice president of merchandising – strategic initiatives, Gail is a strategic business leader with a solid track record of collaboratively improving, building and operating large-sized businesses through strong partnerships.
With BuildDirect having tripled its staff in the six months leading up to Gail’s arrival, she is tasked with leveraging that team to continue adding to the company’s growing product lines, expanding its strong supplier network and refining its worldwide sales strategy. While she’s worked in diverse roles and industries over two decades, the recurring theme in Gail’s career is her ultimate commitment to, and insight about, meeting the end-customer’s needs.
Gail is dedicated to professional development and has completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School and the IWF Fellowship program.
Heidi Rolston – Vice President, People
Heidi joined BuildDirect in 2012 and contributes her experience in operations, HR, Leadership Development, and Internal Communications. Most recently the VP of HR and Leadership Development at the Forzani Group, Heidi has held senior roles in organizations recognized for their strong cultures and employment brands, such as Crystal Decisions, and WestJet.
A life-long learner, Heidi has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia and Masters of Business from the Schulich School of Business.
Heidi has created value for organizations by engineering a differentiated employee experience, with the result of ensuring a unique customer experience. At BuildDirect she is working to preserve our strong culture, enabling growth for both the organization and the team. Heidi is passionate about working with an organization that is committed to continual evolution (and occasional revolution) in the pursuit of excellence.
James Komenda – Vice President, Sales
James brings an infectious positive attitude and driven nature to his role of Vice President of Sales for BuildDirect. Joining the company in 2007 as a junior sales associate, James was promoted to Director of Sales in 2010 plus appointed to the organization’s executive management team.
Utilizing his previous sales experience within BuildDirect, James supports and coaches a team of 40 sales representatives to develop, implement and deliver the best purchase experience possible for customers. As vice president, his focus remains on the strategy and tactics required for a best in class sales department to achieve corporate objectives as BuildDirect continues to accelerate its growth.
James graduated from the University of Winnipeg in 2007 with a BA in Sociology. While at university he was the Warehouse Manager for Triple M Sales, an Industrial Machinery and Equipment supplier, as well as the team leader for the University of Winnipeg Student’s Association (USWA) Community Ambassador Program.
